What does a developmental edit check?
A developmental edit checks whether the manuscript works as a complete reading experience. It looks at structure, argument or plot, character and motivation, scene and chapter purpose, pacing, point of view, continuity, setup and payoff, thematic coherence, and the relationship between the intended reader and what the book actually delivers. It should distinguish root problems from symptoms and support judgments with manuscript evidence. Grammar and surface correctness belong mainly to later copyediting and proofreading passes.

Book-level questions
The editor asks what the book is doing, where it changes direction, what carries the reader forward, and whether the ending fulfills the opening's promise.
For nonfiction, this includes argument, sequence, examples, and reader transformation. For fiction and memoir, it includes causality, character pressure, point of view, and emotional payoff.
Cross-chapter questions
Continuity, repetition, pacing, and setup-payoff relationships often live far apart. The editor must compare passages across the manuscript rather than treat each chapter as an island.
A local note becomes more useful when it names the larger pattern: repeated exposition, disappearing motivation, duplicated chapter purpose, or a promise that never returns.
What comes later
Line editing works on expression, rhythm, and clarity. Copyediting works on correctness and consistency. Proofreading checks the final laid-out text for remaining errors.
Developmental work can mention a sentence to show a pattern, but it should not bury the structural verdict under thousands of local corrections.

Does developmental editing check grammar?
It may flag recurring clarity problems, but grammar correction is not its main job. Copyediting and proofreading follow after structure settles.
Does it check facts?
