Cost and fit

Book editing cost calculator

A book editing cost calculator turns manuscript length and service type into a planning range, not a quote. Use it to estimate the order of magnitude, then compare actual offers by complete or sampled read, editorial letter, in-text notes, calls, revision rounds, turnaround, and exclusions. The calculator below uses current Reedsy marketplace ranges for developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading. Wordsmith's $50 software read is a different service and relationship, so it is shown separately rather than treated as a cheaper equivalent.

Estimate a human editing range

Use current Reedsy marketplace ranges as a planning estimate. An editor's quote can change with genre, condition, deadline, experience, and deliverables.

Estimated market range

$2,080 to $4,240

Developmental editing at $0.026 to $0.053 per word for 80,000 words.

This estimates a human marketplace service. Wordsmith is software with a different scope and relationship: one manuscript costs $50 after a free sample. See the exact current terms on Wordsmith pricing.

How the estimate works

Choose a service and enter the manuscript's word count. The calculator multiplies that count by the lower and upper per-word marketplace rates published by Reedsy.

The range is a planning tool. Genre, manuscript condition, editor experience, deadline, and the actual deliverables can move a quote outside it.

Compare scope after price

Ask whether the editor reads the complete manuscript, what written artifact you receive, whether in-text notes or calls are included, how follow-up works, and what is explicitly excluded.

Developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading solve different problems. Do not compare their prices as if the deliverables were interchangeable.

Where Wordsmith fits

Wordsmith charges $50 for one software-based whole-manuscript read after a free sample. Fred returns a developmental letter and chapter work while the writer keeps every revision decision.

A human editor remains the stronger fit when you want specialist genre judgment, a sustained relationship, collaborative calls, or a person who can challenge goals that are still changing.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator an editing quote?

No. It applies published marketplace ranges to word count. An editor's real quote depends on the manuscript, scope, schedule, and relationship.

Why are line editing rates not separate?

Service labels overlap across marketplaces. The calculator uses the three distinct categories for which the cited Reedsy guide publishes current per-word ranges.
