How the read works

What happens in a whole-manuscript critique?

A whole-manuscript critique reads the book as one connected work before turning observations into a revision plan. The reader identifies the manuscript's governing intention, follows structure, character, argument, continuity, pacing, and voice across chapters, then separates book-level problems from local symptoms. The useful output is not a pile of comments. It is a prioritized account of what the book is doing, where the reader experience breaks, what evidence supports that judgment, and which revision decisions matter first.

Read before prescribing

Early impressions matter, but they should remain provisional until the ending and full arc are known. A later chapter can resolve, contradict, or reframe what appeared to be a problem near the start.

The reader keeps track of promises, facts, character motivations, thematic threads, and structural turns so the critique can compare distant parts of the manuscript.

Synthesize across passes

A complete critique combines several lenses: structural shape, scene and chapter purpose, character or argument progression, continuity, pacing, point of view, and line-level voice.

The synthesis should explain relationships among problems. A pacing issue may come from repeated scene purpose. A character issue may begin as missing causality two chapters earlier.

Turn judgment into an order of work

The revision plan should start with decisions that make later work obsolete: cuts, additions, reordering, point-of-view changes, and missing causal links. Local polish comes later.

Fred returns a developmental letter and then works chapter by chapter against its whole-book understanding, so local suggestions can remain connected to the larger diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

How is a whole-manuscript critique different from chapter feedback?

It can judge setup and payoff, continuity, pacing, and repeated patterns across the complete work. Chapter feedback alone cannot reliably see those relationships.

Should the critique include line edits?

It may include examples, but structural decisions should come first. Extensive line work is easily wasted when chapters will move or disappear.
