Is your manuscript ready for developmental editing?
A manuscript is ready for developmental editing when it has a complete beginning, middle, and end; you can state what the book is trying to do; and you are prepared to reconsider structure rather than only polish sentences. It does not need to be clean or publication-ready. It does need to be complete enough that an editor can judge setup against payoff and local choices against the whole. If major sections are still missing or the book's purpose is changing weekly, finish that work first.

The minimum readiness test
Confirm that every planned chapter exists, placeholders are labeled, and the ending is present. The editor needs to see the actual arc, not the arc you intend to write later.
- Complete draft
- Stable chapter order or clearly marked alternatives
- Known audience and form
- One sentence on what the book is trying to do
- Willingness to make structural changes
What does not need to be finished
Grammar, formatting, and sentence polish can remain rough. Developmental work may cut or rewrite those passages anyway.
You also do not need certainty. The point of the read is to expose decisions you cannot see from inside the draft.
When to wait
Wait if the manuscript has missing chapters, several competing endings, or a premise you no longer believe. A critique of an unstable object creates feedback you cannot cleanly interpret.
If only one section is blocked, name that uncertainty in a short note. The reader can then distinguish a deliberate placeholder from an accidental gap.

Can a first draft be ready?
Yes, if it is complete and you want structural diagnosis. Some writers prefer one self-revision pass first so obvious gaps do not consume the critique.
