Beta reader vs developmental editor: reaction or diagnosis?
A beta reader tells you what the reading experience felt like: where attention dropped, what confused them, which character they believed, and whether the ending landed. A developmental editor turns those effects into a manuscript diagnosis, tests the diagnosis across chapters, and orders the resulting revision decisions. Beta readers are valuable because they react as readers, not because every suggested fix is right. Use them when the draft is complete enough to test on its intended audience. Use developmental editing when reactions conflict, repeat without an obvious cause, or require a whole-book view to translate into action.
