Developmental edit vs manuscript critique: which do you need?
A manuscript critique usually gives a writer a compact diagnosis of how the whole draft is working. A developmental edit usually goes further into the causes, affected chapters, and revision decisions, and may include margin notes, calls, or another pass. The labels are not standardized, so compare the actual work: complete or sampled read, editorial letter, chapter evidence, in-text notes, follow-up, and exclusions. Choose the smallest scope that can answer your current manuscript decision. Compare the decision, not the label
A critique is often enough when you need a whole-book diagnosis and a small number of priorities. A deeper developmental engagement is more useful when you need the diagnosis traced through chapters and translated into a larger revision plan.
Service names vary. Ask what question the engagement is designed to answer and what manuscript evidence the reader will use.
Inspect the deliverable
Put each offer into the same columns: complete or sampled read, editorial letter, chapter notes, in-text comments, call, revision round, turnaround, and exclusions.
A longer report is not automatically better. The useful artifact explains the central problems, supports them with passages, and makes the order of work visible.
Choose the smallest sufficient read
Do not buy depth you do not need, but do not buy a short diagnosis when your real problem is turning conflicting symptoms into cross-chapter decisions.
