Developmental editing vs copyediting: solve the right problem first
Developmental editing asks whether the manuscript works. Copyediting asks whether the settled language is correct, clear, and consistent. A developmental edit can recommend cuts, additions, reordering, or changes to motivation and argument. A copyedit checks grammar, usage, consistency, facts within scope, and style after those larger decisions are stable. If revisions in one chapter keep breaking another, start developmentally. If the book's structure holds and the remaining problems are correctness and consistency, start copyediting. Buying them in the wrong order pays to perfect text that may not survive.

Function before correctness
A correct sentence can still live in a chapter the book does not need. Developmental work decides the function and order of the material before copyediting standardizes its language.
Copyediting becomes valuable when the manuscript's larger choices are stable and the remaining risks are clarity, correctness, and consistency.
Use a diagnostic decision tree
Start developmentally when the problem concerns structure, causality, argument sequence, pacing, point of view, or setup and payoff. Start copyediting when the problem concerns grammar, usage, spelling, style conventions, or internal consistency within an agreed scope.
If both kinds of problem remain, resolve the book-level one first.
Make the handoff explicit
A developmental handoff should leave a stable revised manuscript and a list of deliberate style choices. A copyediting handoff should state the style guide, fact-checking scope, variant of English, and any language the writer intends to preserve.
Do not call a combined service complete until both altitudes have been handled in order.
Frequently asked questions
Does copyediting improve style?
It can improve clarity and consistency, but a separate line edit may own deeper sentence rhythm, tone, and expression.
Should a first draft go to a copyeditor?
Only when its larger decisions are unusually stable. Most writers should resolve structural uncertainty first.
