How to check character arc continuity across a novel
Check character arc continuity by tracing the character's desire, belief, pressure, choice, consequence, and changed behaviour at each major turn. The question is not whether the character stays consistent. It is whether each departure from prior behaviour is prepared by pressure and evidence the reader can recover. Compare early promises with later payoffs, identify missing reactions after major events, and flag scenes where the plot requires a choice the manuscript has not earned. Revise the causal chain before adding explanatory thoughts.

Build the arc from choices and consequences
At each major turn, record what the character wants, believes, fears, chooses, and learns from the consequence. An arc is the causal relationship among those states, not a chronology of moods.
Track the pressure that makes a choice possible or necessary. A plot event does not create character change by itself unless the manuscript shows how the character interprets and responds to it.
Test departures from prior behaviour
Flag every moment when the character acts against an established desire, belief, or pattern. Then locate the pressure, evidence, concealment, or internal conflict that makes the departure legible.
Inconsistency can be deliberate and powerful. The failure is not contradiction but a contradiction the manuscript has not prepared or made consequential.
Repair missing setup before adding explanation
Compare the ending's changed behaviour with the opening's promises. If the final choice feels required by the plot rather than earned by the character, look backward for the missing choice, consequence, or failed attempt.
Prefer revising the causal chain over adding a paragraph that explains the change after it happens. Readers trust accumulated evidence more than retrospective explanation.
