How to disagree with editorial feedback without ignoring the reader effect
Disagree with editorial feedback by separating three things: the reader effect, the editor's diagnosis of its cause, and the proposed fix. You may reject the fix while accepting that a reader became confused, bored, unconvinced, or emotionally detached. Return to the cited passages and test whether the effect repeats elsewhere. Then state the deliberate choice you are protecting and ask whether another revision could solve the reader problem without flattening it. A useful disagreement produces a clearer manuscript decision. A reflexive yes or no produces only compliance or avoidance.

Separate effect, diagnosis, and fix
Rewrite the note in three lines: what the reader experienced, what the editor thinks caused it, and what change the editor proposes. Those are three claims, not one instruction.
You can accept the effect while rejecting the explanation or the solution. That distinction keeps useful evidence even when the suggested rewrite does not belong in the book.
Test the evidence across the manuscript
Return to the cited passage and inspect nearby setup, consequence, and repetition. Ask whether another complete reader reported the same effect and whether distant chapters support or contradict the diagnosis.
A note without evidence deserves clarification. A precise passage does not become irrelevant simply because only one reader noticed it.
Protect intent with an alternative decision
Name the genre convention, voice choice, ambiguity, or structural effect you intend to preserve. Then propose another change that answers the reader problem without surrendering that intention.
The goal is not to win an argument with the editor. It is to leave with a more explicit manuscript decision that can be tested on the page.
