How many revision rounds does a novel need?
A novel needs as many revision rounds as there are distinct manuscript-level decisions that cannot be safely solved together, not a universal number of drafts. Separate passes are often useful for structure and causality, character and point of view, pacing and continuity, and finally language and correctness. Combine passes when their decisions share evidence; separate them when one change would invalidate the next. Stop adding full rounds when the arc is stable, intended reader effects hold, remaining notes are local, and another pass no longer has a specific question.

Define a round by its decision
Name the manuscript question before beginning the pass: Does the causal spine hold? Does the character's change feel earned? Does the point of view reveal and withhold consistently?
A pass without a question becomes an endless search for imperfection. A pass with a decision creates evidence and a stopping condition.
Separate changes that invalidate one another
Resolve structure, causality, major character movement, and point of view before polishing scenes or sentences that those decisions may remove. Reread the complete affected span after every large change.
Combine concerns when they use the same evidence. Separate them when fixing one would make the next pass obsolete or impossible to interpret.
Use a stopping test instead of a draft count
Stop full-manuscript rounds when the intended arc holds, setup supports payoff, continuity survives the latest changes, and remaining notes are local enough for line or copy work.
Another complete pass should answer a named uncertainty. If it only restates settled preferences, move to a narrower edit or let the manuscript rest.
