What should a developmental editorial letter include?
A developmental editorial letter should explain what the manuscript is trying to do, what is already working, the few book-level problems that matter most, the evidence for each judgment, and the order in which the writer should make decisions. It should connect local symptoms to root causes across chapters and distinguish diagnosis from optional fixes. Length alone does not prove quality. A useful letter gives the writer a clearer model of the book and enough specificity to begin revising without pretending that every comment has equal priority.

Start with the editorial argument
The letter should name the manuscript's apparent intention, the reader experience it currently creates, and the small number of decisions that would most change the result.
Working mechanisms belong in the argument too. They tell the writer what revision should preserve.
Connect claims to evidence
Each major diagnosis should point to representative scenes, chapters, claims, or transitions and explain the effect they create. A list of unsupported impressions is not yet a developmental argument.
Evidence should span the manuscript when the claim is about structure, continuity, pacing, or setup and payoff.
Make priority part of the deliverable
The letter should separate root problems from local consequences and order revision by dependency. Otherwise a writer may polish pages that a later structural decision removes.
Optional fixes should remain distinguishable from the diagnosis. The writer owns the solution.
